September – “Rhythm”

Sabra Issa Avatar

Half-way through the year – and coincidentally after the summer holidays – I tend to lose my routine. It slips from me. I can feel it, as if the energy that is required to keep it in place has been spent and my marbles are rolling in every direction.

I’ve spent years in a bad cycle of beating myself up over this lack of maintaining routine. I called myself lazy, stupid, dysfunctional and other things that are not worth repeating. It’s ironically funny how I had zero issues keeping that routine going; beat yourself up, back on track, rinse and repeat.

Last year this moment happened during a depressive episode and that is double crap. It made me wonder if I should quit art. I considered it and figured that I would do one last desperate sprint and then I would decide. I painted every random thing with every random art supply I could find for two weeks. And afterwards I felt better. Or at least I didn’t feel worse. And I picked up where I left off.

I guess it doesn’t really matter how many times you have to run into the same wall before you learn something. As long as you do.

Last month’s work, themed “Space”

What I learned is that – instead of considering everything a failure – you can see these things as part of how you function. Perhaps I need a reset mid-way through the year. Perhaps I need a change of pace or a weird challenge. And perhaps that’s ok.

Right? 😉

This month I will put aside the long-lasting projects and giant canvasses. My aim is to make a LOT of art lol. Let’s not pretend that I’ll stick to daily this-and-that because that has never work for longer than 24 hours but we’ll TRY! During the livestreams and Zoom meetings I’ll start and finish a portrait as well. I’m looking forward to it and I hope to see you there!

  1. I find transitional times…seasons, holidays…difficult too. Maybe I’m old enough or have been through them enough to know they don’t last and I need to change things up. Creating short, sweet projects often help. Focussing on quantity vs quality. Hang in there, Sabra. Don’t listen to the Brain Monkeys. Just give’em something to do. You got this. 😍
