August – “Space”

Space fascinates me. Not just the one with the stars and black holes and what not. But just, the concept of space. My space, your space. Big, small. Small can feel safe and big can feel small. In art, when you move away from focussing on the object, to focussing on the space, it becomes a different thing. Like I said, fascinating.

My kid and I live in a small(ish) space on one level. The dynamic between two creative neurodivergent introverts in such a space is an interesting one. We both need ‘our’ space as much as we need to be in contact with the other’s space. The distribution of space has long been relatively the same, as was the designated purpose of each room. I always had thoughts about changing that at some point but it never felt like the right time. Then, the kid grew – both physically and mentally – and I felt constricted. And so it was time to change.

We moved spaces and in that time between the old and new state of things, everything feels very lost. It’s perhaps not even the mess, or the chaos but more the undefined state of things. Nothing seems to belong anywhere and in turn it made me think I don’t belong. It reminded me of the stage that some paintings have while you work on them. That stage where something could potentially go in any direction but you don’t know where to take it and you feel lost and unsure. The no man’s land.

If painting taught me anything, it’s that it’s worth it to push through. Maybe it won’t give the desired result, maybe it will. But the act of pushing through that stage for the sake of it, is rewarding in itself. It helped me to stop feeling a victim to situations that are simply part of a process. When we pushed through, suddenly all my things were in the right place again. I sat down in my ‘new’ studio (formerly my living room) and thought to myself, “I could work here”. My kid played guitar in his new room. Voila, space.

I will try some things this month during the livestreams and such. I’m not sure yet what but I want to explore some different kinds of spaces within my substrate. Composition within a given space is such a world on its own and I’ve always been a little scared of it. Let’s just take a few steps first. 🙂

well, Sabra, this made me think about “space”. I am facing a big change in my life soon and it freaks me out. I have been living alone for 26 years and I feel grand about it. I do want I want, I eat when I want and I di all sorts of things without considering wherher it could bother someone BUT, since costs arise in a dizzy manner I invited my youngest son to move in in irder to save the enormous rent he has got to pay.
That means I have to give up my studio and try to integrate my stuff into my bedroom…..my space will not be the same anymore. I don’t know hiw I am gone cope with this; art had become a meanjngful tool in my life. Firstly it saved me from drowning into loniness and secondly I was going to experience what was long slummering inside me.
My system needs space to be able to breath, I need space to decide to myself otherwise I feel trapped. I.e. when myhusband gave me a prolonged hug just to tell me how happy he was to have met me and instantly I was trying to free myself from that embrace. Funny, since I loved him dearly🤔. But its me thatvreacts like this when there is no space….oh, Lord, help me to be able to tackle my new set-up when it comes to the point sharing my space.

Thank you, dearest Sabra, for being what you are and to show up. You helped me this morning to express the pressure and get rud of the damp🙏❤️😊

    hugs, Renate

Oh my friend, it feels like we’re twins sometimes! I too love people dearly but please don’t hug me tight or I feel like I will push you off me. I don’t know what that is, it’s been like that all my life. I love everyone from a reasonable distance haha!

You’re amazing for wanting to help your child in the current economic climate. But I understand your struggles. When I gave up my old art room (the largest bedroom) to my son, I thought about doing my art in the small bedroom. But that was never going to work. So now I claim the living room as my creative space. It felt so strange at first, because in my mind the living room is for everyone and also for guests. But I don’t have that many visitors! And the ones that do visit (my mother and my friends) don’t care about it. They actually love seeing art supplies, art books and my unfinished works. I found it very easy to work in my living room after I got over the hesitation. Perhaps that could be an option for you too? Our art is our life and so the word ‘living room’ might then as well be ‘art room’ 🙂 Thanks you as always for sharing your thoughts Renate!
