During the last Zoom hangout, someone said, “what about endurance?”. She said it as if we’d already discussed it before even though it never came up. The ease with which we communicate during the times we meet in our community is something that still surprises me in such a good way. And so the theme was set.
This is the first time I had to look up a word. My high school English remembers ‘endurance’ as a term for duration, like a marathon. But then I thought, what about ‘to endure’? Which to me is related to hardship or even worse. I wasn’t sure if maybe the two were different words and I just hadn’t remembered correctly. But they aren’t. Different dictionaries say a variety of things but their common idea is the ability to endure difficulty over an extended period of time. That hardship can range from an external factor (you break both your legs) to self-imposed struggles (you decided to run a marathon). You could ponder for hours or days even about the question if endurance is even endurance without struggle or sprinkle of suffering. I mean, what if running a marathon is physically less painful for one body than it is for the other? Would there be less to endure?
If you’re not done pondering after this, you could consider the vast relativity of the idea of hardship or pain. But if you’re not into any of that, you might be pleased to know there is an equestrian sport (you know, the one with the horsies) called endurance and the gist is: not too fast and not too slow. I might keep that in mind this month.
I hope you will join me again this month during the livestreams, the Zoom hangouts and two workshops. They are all free and welcome to nice people! I made a calendar with links that you can click down below. See you soon!
