April – “Light”

Sabra Issa Avatar

If you live in the northern hemisphere, you’ll notice the days getting longer. The light getter stronger, creating a different kind of shadow on everything it illuminates. Light – both its presence and absence – is a fascinating thing.

I learned to see the different kinds of light and shadow when I started reading photography books. Direct, indirect, ambient, bounced. Soft shadows and hard shadows. I wasn’t even looking for the information perse because I bounced through life (and books) with uncanny speed and ignorance. I was reading it and then looked around and thought “oh…uh….OH LOOK” and then you can never un-see it. It’s one of those obvious examples of how knowledge literally changes the way you look at your world. And how very vital it is to your understanding of that world.

Light is also many, many other things. It’s mood and focus and guidance and reflection. There is the light in the deepest darkness from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. There is the light of your life, who may or may not have a fur coat. And there is the feeling of light, that will have you float for a while.

Let’s see what this theme brings us during the livestreams and Zoom meetings this month. In this blog you’ll find the schedule and all the links you need. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, I would love to read them.
